wtf is an NFT?

(think of a collectible such as a Beanie Baby or your Grandfather's old coins)

NFTs or Non-fungible Tokens are digital assets that can represent a vast variety of intangible and tangible items.

This could range from collectable trading cards, real estate to digital beverages and even digital fashion. 

Unlike a fungible token, such as Bitcoin, where many coins are the same and each NFT contains only one identifiable and verifiable address via the smart contract. 

All identifiable and verifiable data is stored within the Ethereum blockchain. Each token on the blockchain cannot be destroyed nor replicated. Ownership of the tokens are also immutable meaning that collectors actually posses the NFTs in their Ethereum wallets, while full rights remain with the original creator. This is opposite of the current model where if you were to purchase a movie on YouTube, you don't actually own the movie, just the license to stream it.

This is a huge opportunity for artists of any angle. Whether you are a musician, painter, designer, illustrator.... NFTs allow you to sell your artwork in digital form to an international audience without using an auction house or gallery; which allows the creator to keep a much larger portion of the profits made by the collectors purchase. Not only does the artist receive a larger sum, but royalties from secondary market sales can be programmed into the NFT as well.

NFTs are minted on the Ethereum blockchain which distributes all metadata across the IPFS or InterPlanetary File System which immutable and contains all art history of the NFT.
